Yukon has just 282 nomination spaces for 2026 — fewer than the 312 people the territory actually nominated in 2025. With a smaller allocation, the six priorities Yukon uses to rank submissions matter more than ever. One of them is being Francophone or French-speaking, and the French level it asks for is NCLC 5 — considerably lower than most people assume.

What French Level Is Actually Required

If an Expression of Interest indicates the candidate is Francophone or French-speaking, the candidate must reach CLB / NCLC Level 5 in French across all four competencies — speaking, reading, listening and writing. A strong score in one ability cannot make up for a weak one.

NCLC (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadien) is Canada’s official French proficiency scale, the French counterpart to CLB. Level 5 is an intermediate level — enough for everyday and general workplace communication, and well below the high French scores that federal French-category Express Entry draws effectively demand. That gap is what makes this Yukon priority worth a serious look.

Yukon’s Six Priorities for 2026

Expressions of Interest are scored against the following priorities, and only the highest-scoring employers are invited to apply:

• Regulated health care professionals
• Employers in rural Yukon
• Foreign nationals who have lived and worked in Yukon for at least one year
• Yukon University graduates
• Francophone or French-speaking candidates (NCLC 5, all four competencies)
• Recipients of a Temporary Measure Letter of Support in 2024 or 2025

Two Limits to Understand First

• Only employers can submit — workers cannot apply on their own. The Yukon Nominee Program is employer-driven: the employer files the Expression of Interest and the full application, one application per foreign worker. Without a Yukon job offer, strong French alone does not get you into the pool.
• Both 2026 intake windows are now closed. The first ran January 19–30 and the second July 6–17. Expressions of Interest do not carry over — anyone not invited in an earlier round must submit a brand-new EOI with fully updated information.

What Remains on the 2026 Calendar

For employers who filed in the second intake, these are the remaining dates:

• August 3–7: second round of invitations to apply sent
• August 10 or 12: information session for invited employers
• August 26 by 4:30 pm: second-round applications due

Once a nomination is approved, the nominee must apply for permanent residence with IRCC within six months, and a Tripartite Agreement is signed between the Government of Yukon, the nominee and the employer.

Our Advice

If you have some French and would consider Yukon, the useful move right now is not to wait for the next opening — it is to get two things ready in advance: a French test result at NCLC 5, and a Yukon employer willing to nominate you. Both take time, and the intake window is usually open for only two weeks.

Yukon nominates through three streams: Critical Impact Worker (TEER 4 or 5), Skilled Worker (TEER 0 to 3), and Express Entry for candidates already in the federal pool. Which one fits depends on your occupation level and current status.
