Visa Validity
The validity of a visitor visa is decided by a Canadian immigration officer based on each applicant’s circumstances. Most visitor visas are now issued as multiple-entry visas (Multiple Entry Visa).
- A single-entry visa generally permits one entry;
- A multiple-entry visa may be issued valid until the passport expires;
- Some applicants may receive a visa valid for up to nearly ten years.
Visa validity does not mean you can stay in Canada indefinitely. The length of stay permitted at each entry is ultimately decided by a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer. If your passport is about to expire, we recommend renewing it before applying. Final visa validity and length of stay are determined by the Government of Canada.

Eligibility Requirements
- The applicant must be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian
- The Canadian host must meet the income requirement (LICO) and provide a letter of invitation
- The applicant must purchase qualifying medical insurance (at least 1 year of coverage, minimum CAD 100,000)
Visitor Visa Extension
If you wish to stay in Canada beyond your currently authorized period, you may apply from within Canada to extend your visitor status (Visitor Record).
An extension should be filed before your current legal status expires. If you have submitted an extension and are awaiting a decision, you may generally continue to stay in Canada lawfully until a final decision is received.
Restoration of Status
If your status has expired but no more than 90 days have passed, you may be eligible to apply to restore it. A restoration application generally requires:
- explaining the reason for the lapse;
- submitting the relevant application;
- paying the restoration fee.
After the prescribed period, the chance of restoring status decreases significantly.
Consequences of a Refused Extension
If your extension is refused, you should leave Canada as soon as possible. Continuing to stay unlawfully may lead to:
- negative effects on future visa applications;
- a negative entry record;
- being required to leave;
- in serious cases, a removal order.
